The second edition of Firefly Night Race will make its mark on East Malaysia, Sabah. One of the thirteen states which Malaysia is made of, Sabah is the second largest state in Malaysia and shares the island of Borneo with Sarawak, Brunei, and Indonesian Kalimantan.
Biking off at Likas Bay Park, cycling along the challenging coastal terrains, and ending at the Tip of Borneo, the Firefly Night Racers will attempt to conquer the 250km in one night. Protected by three safety vehicles traveling at 25km/h (front safety convoy, back safety convoy and end convoy) and an advance vehicle paving the way 40km ahead of the team, the racers will have full concentration on conquering the hilly terrains with potholes and unidentified moving/non-moving objects. This edition will have an additional fifth vehicle that will ferry all the personal belongings, bike boxes and provisions. Unlike Firefly Night Race I, which the team had the luxury of resting at kopitams even at wee hours, the team will have to make do with self-made rest stops and rooms.
Kick Off: 15 July 2011, Likas Bay Park
Opened to the public in December 2008, the RM 3.7 million Taman Likas Public Park stretches along the beach at Tun Fuad Stephens Road (Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens), Likas Bay. The 7.6 acres of park is completed with amenities and comprises a main plaza, pedestrian walk, bicycle paths, fitness stations, benches, gazebos and a children’s playground. The park is frequented by local picnickers especially on weekends and public holiday, and also a resting place for waterbirds or migrants waders.
End Point: 16 July 2011, Tip of Borneo
Also known as Tanjung Simpang Mengayau, which means lingering junction, the tip is where the South China Sea lingers and meets the Sulu Seas flowing from the east. The dramatic headland is situated in the northern-most tip of Borneo, the third largest island in the world, after Greenland and New Guinea. Located in the Kudat Peninsula, it is about three and a half hours drive from Kota Kinabalu City, or one night's ride by Firefly Night Race term.
